Year 3 are really excited to be learning about all things Bear Grylls in our Spring term topic ‘Survival of the Fittest’. We have already started the term with a WOW day out in forest school. Here we built survival dens for our explorer bears, learnt some basic first aid and sang campfire songs and created stories- as well as making sure we had a survival energy snack!
As the term goes on we will be learning about all things wilderness. We will developing our understanding of direction, using compasses, as well as plotting things onto maps using grid references. We will be talking about the things we need to survive and thinking about what plants need to grow in our science topic. Our English will initially be focussed on a text called ‘Ice Palace’ and we will be creating a range of our own writing about how to survive an icy land, along with narratives of our own. As well as this, we will be focussing on learning key life skills such as sewing, tying laces, basic first aid and swimming. After all, these skills may be key to an explorer’s survival! Our wilderness centre trip will also take place this term where our survival skills will be put to the test in our outdoor pursuits and overnight stay. We can’t wait to become survival experts!
